Or certainly more distracting, at any rate. Case in point: I got some extremely bad news last week, and essentially been crying ever since. Today, I was doing my crying on the bed, with my head near a window that has been open about an inch or two.
At some point, I turned over on my stomach and discovered myself face-to-twitchy nose with a squirrel that was sitting in my window box, and that had stuck her head into my house. All of 3 or 4 inches away from my face. My instinct was to reach through the window opening to stroke her. I didn’t get to pet her, but I brushed across her paws that were resting on the sill, and her tail, as she turned to flee.
It took just a short moment, but afterwards I found that my eyes were dry for the first time in days.
Of course, it all happened too quickly to take a photo, but I took these on another occasion, and who knows, maybe it is the same squirrel friend.

Sorry to hear you’ve been so sad! Animals, domestic and wild, have always been there for me during rough times. I’m so glad to hear your squirrel friend was there for you!

Sheepandwool it won’t do me any good to tell you not to be sad because life throws these days at us just as much as the happy ones. It is such a blessing to have a visit by an unexpected unconditional friend who will listen and put a smile on your face. How very sweet!
