Fireblight took all the apples from my ‘Yellow Newtown Pippin’ but two. Despite having no other fruit to support, the two remaining were still growing very slowly. While there was a peck or two on my ‘Gravenstein’ apples, the Pippins were unmolested so I didn’t feel the need to bag them.
Today when I went out to water the garden, I saw the twig that held them broken off the tree. One small unripe apple was gone. The other had what looked like a bird peck in it. Either it was a very fat bird or it was a squirrel because the twig was broken right off even though it was green, not dead.

After yet more pecking on my ‘Gravenstein’ apples, I finally put up some bird netting.
