So we reached a humidex of 42C (107.6F) today. Yesterday it was a humidex of 39C (102.2F) Tomorrow is forecasted to be the same as yesterday. It’s like going outside into a sauna.

I did get some things done in spite of the heat. It was a work-a-little, rest-in-the-shade kind of day. Went through a lot of water and ice, too!

I planted up 4 planters of house-type plants surrounded by impatiens, plus one window box style planter with just impatiens which I put under the bench in the vegetable garden. I saw the idea at one of the garden tours I went on last year or the year before. And lucky me, cousin Ruth gave me the bench when I visited her in Brantford last week. It sure is nice to have down there for all those times I need a break between jobs in the garden.

I also managed to give away a dozen tomato plants to a neighbour and now I only need to find homes for half a dozen more.

Today I made sure to water all the plants in the shade garden. In spite of the short but plentiful rain we had last evening, that area was really dry. I’m pleased with the way things are coming there. This is the third year for all of the hostas in that part of the garden and most of them are coming along really well.

The photos are of one side of my shade/woodland garden. The other side is up against the house, and this side is my hosta garden. I started this garden three years ago. There are three or four more hostas I’d like to get, plus some more grasses and ferns, plus maybe some driftwood or something. Just realized I need to add a couple of plants that are in this garden!

Thanks rosemarieGardener ! Hazel J … I totally agree, although with the new Ontario Hydro rate system, we held off as long as we could and only put a window one on before bed. The whole house one hasn’t needed to go on yet because we have an old house with small windows and double brick walls so it stays cool quite a while as long as we keep the windows and blinds closed!

Unfortunately, laurieann, with the humidity as high as it is, shade doesn’t help … have to stay inside when it’s this hot. Did manage to wash up a lot of planting pots etc. … getting ready for next year ! :)
