This evening I did some weeding, and cut out the last of my over-wintered lettuce. The Red New Fire lettuce had over-wintered nicely and we did eat a lot of it, but it’s gone to seed and it was time to cut it down.
Just next to the lettuce were some other over-wintered crops of bunching onions. I picked them all out as well.
Also in the same bed I picked out some volunteer potatoes. Just little guys, but it was bed clearing day, so some nice snack poppers there.
In my pepper bed, I harvest my first pepper of the season, a Pepperoncini. These are my wife’s specialty at eating, so I’ll see if she approves. I also noticed that a new heirloom called the Belgian Red is starting to set fruit, very interesting looking pepper; I’ll be interested in trying these.
In the bean patch, I did some inspecting and grabbed a handful of beans. I love the filet varieties I planted this year, so much more elegant to look at. They’re about to go into full swing on the production.
I harvested a whole planting of romaine, so we’ll be doing caesar salad tomorrow for dinner.
I also picked out some new herb varieties I’m trying for the first time this year, Oregano True Greek and Basil Napoletano.
The main event was the pulling up of the garlic. I’ve unhooked my water to them and will let them sit until the weekend, but I tested the waters today and pulled up two Lorz Italian garlic plants. One was a bit small at 2 oz, but the other was good sized at 5 oz and 2" diameter. I’m not sure what size most people are getting, but I’m very happy so far. Most of the color was retained on them, so I assume I picked them at the right time.
I love these multi-veggie harvest days, they make gardening so much fun!

Wow – your garlic is a lot earlier than ours. Should think it will be another 3-4 weeks before I can harvest any. Sounds like your garden is doing great – the thought of caesar salad with freshly picked romaine is making my mouth water!
