This is a volunteer growing in our yard among the lilacs. Now about 6 feet tall. Lightish brown smooth bark with whitish markings. This was when it was flowering in late May.

EDIT 19 June 2012: I added a couple more photos. The Hackcherry seems to be the European version. So, I think it is either the Chokecherry as Janietta suggested or Black (Wild) Cherry (Prunus serotina) which are both common to the US east coast. Thanks everyone for your help. I’ll leave this open in case anyone has more info to add.

It looks like the wild cherry (bird or black cherry?) that we have in our yard. It’s pretty when it’s in bloom, but the seeds spread everywhere! Also ours gets these ugly galls you can see here http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1285822.

I would have gone with chokecherry (prunus virginianus?) simply because they are so common to most of the eastern seaboard.
