What is wrong

Sunday, 17 Jun 12 Rainy 18°C / 64°F

My basil is looking singularly unhappy, and I don’t have a clue why. \its well drained, its getting sun, and its watered from below. I love pesto. Really love pesto. This is a problem :(

Check the base of the stem, where it’s coming out of the ground. At my workplace we have grown thousands of basil plants in optimum, sterile conditions, yet still a lot of them have this weird brown disease/rot on the stem which leads to the plant looking like this. :)

All 6 of my basil are looking like the one in the photo, only one of the plants has brown at ground level, it looks like someone has taken some brown sellotape and wrapped it around the stem ie, its quite a narrow band, but all the way round. Can they be rescued or do I chuck ’em out and start again?
