My irises have come back! I don’t know why they thrill me so much, but they do. Maybe it’s because I have very little idea of how they work, unlike roses, so they’re a constant surprise. Or maybe it’s simply that I’m surprised that I didn’t manage to kill them last year when I divided them.
I only have three kinds, and I have no idea what they’re called. They’re all lumped together under the heading of “bearded iris”. But they were given to me by an award winning iris cultivator who had to move out of his two acre garden and nursery. All of them are his babies.
Also, my viburnums are blooming. Yay! The snowball viburnum, especially, makes me happy. We call it our popcorn ball tree. The finches, chickadees, goldfinches and robins all love it as well.
In less than awesome news, most of my melons withered and died back. I think the change in weather last week was just toooo much for them. I should have left the cover on for another couple of weeks. Live and learn. I cut them back to see if they’d grow from the two new leaves at the nearest axial, but I don’t know if that will work. Because I’ve got nothing to lose with them at this point, I direct sowed a few seeds and we’ll see if they grow. What the heck, it’s worth a shot.

Your viburnum is lovely – I can see why you call it your popcorn ball tree. The irises are exquisite as well.

All three are gorgeous! Iris’s confuse the heck out me too. I have purple giant bearded irisis. I had 2 separate clumps planted in a bed. Same soil, light, water and nutrients. One clump blooms every year. The other clump, nothing. The clumps were the same size. Last fall I divided the clumps. Same thing … One set bloomed this year. The other set … nothing! I can’t figure it out?

I recently took some cuttings from a friends’ shrub that looks very similar to your snowball viburnum. She had no idea what it was called.
