I did not know this! I read it today, and now I’m going to be checking out those little stickers for sure.

Those stickers on fruits and veggies tell you quite a bit! 4 numbers mean they were conventionally grown. 5 numbers starting with number 8 means they are genetically modified (GMO). And 5 numbers starting with 9 means they were organically grown. Info via ~ Growing Organic, Eating Organic

How interesting, though it seems odd that the GMO veggies are marked given the amount of energy/money the big companies put into preventing labelling of GMO foods.

I know! I was wondering the same thing. I’m going to have to be checking things out on my trip to the grocery this weekend.

Good info! Where did you read this? Thank you for sharing.

EDIT: Oh, I just realized you name your source. Is that a magazine?

@Deanna, that is a Facebook page.

I just did a bit more looking on this subject. Here is a bit more info in this article:
    http://www.examiner.com/article/the-myth-of-plu-codes-and-gmo-foods
Basically, this is true, but the use of the codes is voluntary. So, while it is true that a number starting with “8” would signify GMO, it is rare that the designation is used. It is more likely that you would see the “9” as marketers believe that consumers would pay more for organic.
