Does anyone have any suggestions? I have got a half barrel, which has no bottom- so it’s really just ornamental. I’m thinking I may put a small tree in it. It needs to be hardy and I’d like it to have interesting foliage most if not all of the year.
Any suggestions?

I just learned from kathn’s journal about the
“flying dragon tree " .
I am pretty partial to false cypress like this one and to interesting dwarf pines like this one

What would you think of one of the hardier camellias?

You want something blooming in winter? camellias are so overplanted around Seattle its hard for me to get excited, but if you want one be sure to get one that drops its flowers cleanly and doesnt stay covered with yucky brown remnants of the bloom. How about Camellia sinensis, Tea plant? Then you could make your own green tea. or if you like camellia you might also like stewartia or Oncoba spinosa.
For a tall shrub Daphne Bholua ‘Jacqueline Postill’ has sweet smelling winter blooms. Chilean firebush is spectacular in winter. So is Edgeworthia.
Arbutus are interesting all year, and evergreen.
