Tempted To Insanity By Sunshine

I know it’s too early to plant out the tomatoes. And yet, I did it anyway. The temperature of the soil in the tubs was over the magical 55 degrees, and I wrapped garden cloth around the cages as a protection (and to help them harden off a little more). I just ran out of room for them. Next year, I’ll have the greenhouse, and a good deal more space for the starts to continue on.

We’ll see what happens. It’s an adventure, right?

I also prepped the hill (or hillette, really) for the pumpkins, and space for the cucumbers. I may put the pumpkins out tomorrow. Heck, I may put almost everything out tomorrow, and just cover them. The melon vines have taken over the world. I keep thinking I’m going to break them as I move them here and there for hardening off. It would be a relief to just put them in the ground.

Of course, this is what I get for wanting tender, warm-weather plants in Seattle. I don’t know why I do this to myself. If I was smarter, I’d just wait until mid-May and buy starts. Of course, then I wouldn’t be able to look at them and say, “I grew you from seeds I harvested myself!!” Which is, of course, incredibly satisfying.

So here’s to all the forms of garden insanity. And here’s to all our starts. May they weather the weather, the early planting out, pests and disease, and all forms of user error. May they grow strong and healthy, produce abundantly, and engender in us, their poor, hapless gardeners, a sense of relaxation and pride.

So say we all. Or at least me!

I’m planting my tomatoes out this afternoon myself. I planted them this early last year during the spring that never was and they were all fine.
Plus, apparently the full moon is good for transplanting, and tonight we have a SUPERMOON! I guess.

planted one tomato in a pot the other day and another today, but I have them up against the house for warmth. I just couldn’t stand not having ‘something’ planted. It was also my intention this year, to have at least a few planted out this early just to see how it turns out. This is about three or four weeks early for around here. Still have lots to plant, but will do it gradually.
I wish you success with your tomatoes! :-)

The forecast (for us “up North”!) looks so promising that I guess they’ll be fine, and you are always about 2 weeks ahead of us temperature-wise. EIB’s post reminded me about the Super Moon TONIGHT! Hope we get to see it through the still-heavy cloud cover. Oh, to be in Seattle – gazing at the moon, planting out tomato starts … and eat a decent croissant!
