Here is an update on the grafted tomatoes that I carefully assembled on April 21.
Overall, the score is:
Looking Good -2
Might Make it -2
Probably Fail -1
Fail -1
I am most impressed with the Spudakee Purples which comprise the “Looking Good” group. I have one on a Big Beef rootstock and one on a Celebrity. Both look great. The indomitable scions are so determined to grow that one of them has sprouted roots and is aiming for the soil below. “I can see it from here… if I can just r-e-a-ch it…”
I am going to prune off the roots,… if they make it to the ground it pretty much defeats the purpose of being grafted onto the Big Beef. The main picture is the Spudakee Purple that has sprouted the roots. Picture 2 is the Spudakee on Celebrity.
The “Might Make It” group contains the Opalka and the Lime Green Salad. The Lime Green looks pretty wilty, but today I think it has actually perked up. Perhaps it is over the hump and will start improving from here. I thought the Opalka was a goner, but the stem is not drying up and although it is bent over, it seems to still be intact at the junction. They are documented in pics 3 and 4.
The “Probably Fail” and the “Fail” tomatoes are the Black Krim and the Amazon Chocolate.
The Black Krim, although one of the top specimens on Day 4, has lost the connection between the scion and the rootstock and is totally droopy now. I’ve not given up hope on it yet, but it doesn’t look good.
The Amazon Chocolate is a goner. The scion failed to connect with the rootstock and the top has withered. I pitched this one in the compost this morning. The last pic is the Black Krim with the Amazon in the background.
All photos are from Day 10, yesterday, May 1.
I have added vent holes to their domes and moved them out into normal room light. After another day or so I’ll move them into a sunlit area by the window, then back under the plant lights.
Here is a link back to the start if you’re wondering how it began.
Here’s a link to Update 2 that shows how things are 10 days after this entry.
