  • Very Happy

Firstly, rain. I should just get that one out of the way now. It’s making work (mowing, or any soil related tasks, which turn into mudbaths) almost unpleasant. But everything is so lush and fresh, so I can deal with wearing my waterproofs for that.

I would like to talk about Gerald, though.

…and this morning I found another, Donald, though I won’t be able to tell the difference, or they’ll eat each other or something…

So now I am keeping two Jersey Tiger Moth (Euplagia quadripunctaria) caterpillars in my greenhouse, and they seem very happy with radish leaves, of which I have enough.

I remember there were lots of these moths last summer – so many they became “boring”! They’re beautiful and I’m looking forward to seeing my little ones make the transformation.

Photos: Gerald,
2: Gerald again.
3: From Wikipedia, this is what a JTM looks like as an adult. :)
4: Ohhhhhhhhhhh my venus fly trap (Dionaea muscipula) is flowering!!
5: And Hippeastrum ‘Pinky’ is just delicious. <3

Oooh, Gerald and Donald are going to be very handsome when they grow up! Neat that your Venus Flytrap is blooming, too.

I was going to ask if you had a photo of the adult butterfly, or I was going to look it up myself, when I noticed you had, thoughtfully, provided one! I hope you have success in getting them to change into their adult form!

Very cute, I think they are almost better looking than the grownups! And the baby african violets are pretty sweet, too, but I’m a sucker for the Lamprocapnos. Just lovely.

More inventive with your friend names than me! They look fantastic can’t wait to see their progress. I’m aiming to make the whole garden more bee, butterfly and moth friendly this year. Any tips gratefully recieved.

And thank you, Ihadoneofthose, I think a good range of colours and things with flat flowerheads (such as Achillea, Sedum and things from the daisy family) is a good start for insect-friendly gardening. I think my favourite insect plants are Buddleia davidii, Echinacea purpurea, Sedum spectabile and Leucanthemum vulgare. :)
