The front garden is going gangbusters. I’ve been busy pruning back the Spanish lavender and the shrub roses. Both of them have gotten overly bushy and dense. The lavender is coming back, which is a relief. I can only prune back one rose bush at a time since each one fills up the dumpster. It’s slow going. The Jupiter’s Beard is invading some of them, growing up through the very center. Aargh! Grass is also becoming invasive.

It looks lovely after all your hard work. I wonder, is Jupiter’s Beard the same as our Old Man’s Beard here in UK, a wild form of clematis (Clematis vitalba)?

Hmmm, I don’t think so. Jupiter’s Beard (Centranthus ruber “Coccineus”) grows from a tuber that spreads like mad underground. The growth is much different than clematis — not climbing or vining.
