I sowed a packet of ‘Lettuce Leaf Salad Mix’ in the greenhouse on Gerry’s allotment today. In a few weeks’ time, when they are big enough, I shall plant them out on Plot 12A, my own allotment. These are the cut & come again variety of Lettuce. I’ve never grown this type before as my wife prefers the Romaine type of Cos Lettuce.

Personally, I find the “cut-and-come-again” types are most useful kept in a large pot outside the kitchen door, they can then be harvested in sandwich-sized amounts for ultra-fresh salad and no waste. Keeping them on an allotment tends to mean you don’t get the leaves at their best. Your mileage may vary, of course. If you (or the wife) get into “cut-and-come-again” salads, try something like a Mesclun mixture which grows the complete salad, usually a nice mix of the same lettuces with endive, rocket, greek cress and mizuna.

Thanks for your comments, magick. The allotment is only a 10 minute walk from our flat. We have no “kitchen door” but I could bring a few plants home to grow on the balcony. Our salad consists only on Lettuce, Tomato & Cucumber, all of which I grow myself on the allotment. Although I do grow a few tomato plants on the balcony every year. I have a number of plants out there now. I could bring a Cucumber plant home as well I suppose. Then I could grow all 3 ingredients on the balcony!
