First preventative spray in the orchard today (Bordeaux mix).
The plum blossoms will open in the next day or so, apples are in green tip stage – both a month early. I can only hope we don’t snap back down to freezing while the babies stein bloom. I may be able to save the plums with the sprinkler, but I don’t have enough sprinklers to do frost damage control on the apples. The maple tapping project is a bust. Normally this would be the heart of maple tapping season here, but it’s been in the high 70s and 80s for the past week. I’m not complaining about the beautiful weather, but I’m also not making syrup this year. We pulled all the taps today and had to dump what little sugar we’d collected as it spoiled in the heat. Ahhh, se la vie. If the world doesn’t melt in the Mayan transuniversal death ray of doom on 12/21/12, we will try again next winter.
It is still winter, right?
