And I don’t think there has been a better bloom day.
Oh this weather! All week now I have awoken to some of the thickest fog, travelled to work in it and spent the first few hours (laying turf) at the Horniman not being able to see the other end of a path. Today the sight of litres of dew rising off the grass as the sun evaporated the dew was very impressive, this happening around 9-10am, allowing mowing to commence after tea.
Mowing is so awesome. I think I prefer it even to nursery propagation work. Particularly on a day like today, real tshirt weather, and I felt like I was adding to the summer ambience with the petrol motor hum and that fresh clippings scent.
A solid 5 hours of mowing in balmy 20°C sun was over before it began. So lovely.
What’s blooming in the Horniman gardens right now? Prunus cerasifera is everywhere, slowly shedding its delicate petals. We mostly grow the purple variety, but there are a few green. Ribes sanguineum, Lonicera fragrantissima and Hamamellis have been going for a few months, as have our hellebores.
Our crocuses are mostly over now, but Chionodoxa luciliae/sardensis, Muscari sp, and a huge swathe of daffodils we planted in a grass strip last year.
I was excited about getting back home to log the personal bloom day though. So many things out!
Photos:
1: …because I’m copying Gardenerd, a mosaic of lovely things. :)
2 & 3: Mowing at the Horniman, note my striping! And see how I mowed around all the daffodils under the Prunus in photo 3. ;)
4: Finally! I have been dreaming of this Primula for years. It’s stunning. And there’s nothing naff about it! It’s beautiful and delicate, yet striking and passionate. Love it.
5: A fascinating tulip, I call the cultivar ‘Iridescence’ was either already in my garden or more likely I brought it back from work with many other bulbs last year. So many colours.

I planted that primrose too! Last fall I got a small pot on a clearance table at ta local nursery. I am so hoping it comes up this spring, I haven’t gotten to the back garden where it is planted yet. It is beautiful! All your flowers are beauties!

All the flowers are stunning and your comments on mowing are dead on. How did you make those lovely mosaics though? What a great way to display the depth of plants, singular or multiple!
