First day in the garden

It’s not just unseasonably warm. We’ve had days this warm this early many times. It’s that it never got cold. Usually the first day in the garden I can do surface work—trimming last year’s stalks, pruning berries, moving pots.

Today I was able to set up the pea trellis, because the ground is not frozen so I could sink the supports. There isn’t even any frost in the soil, at least 6 inches down. I’m very worried about insects and blight because I doubt it got cold enough to kill it.

Trimmed and raked the asparagus; no stalks peeking through yet, but that’s the Zone 4 part of the garden, so even with the warm weather that’s got another couple of weeks. First half of the pea trellis went up, and I think I’ll put my brussels sprouts there as well (which reminds me that I need to start those seeds, which I actually should have done 3 weeks ago).

Pruned the canes, pulled out the large ceramic pots.

Here we go.
