Mildew in Soil?

I did some prep work for some of the raised beds today, and when I was turning the soil in two of the beds, there was some white fungal/mildew-like stuff in the dirt under the surface. The main picture shows the white stuff, and the second picture shows the dirt in the opposite corner of the bed that is still fine.

In this bed I had cucumbers, tobacco and mini bell peppers. The mildew was where the peppers were planted, and came up onto the inside of the planter box as well.

In the other bed was tomatoes, marigolds and basil. Both patches were heaviest in the south portion of the bed.

So … mildew or something else? Caused from … ? The beds aren’t swamped. They have decent drainage. Do I need to worry about it?

I think that is mycorrhiza, beneficial fungi that act as an extension of your plant’s roots. A good problem to have!

If I’m wrong, then I’m in trouble too :)

Looks “normal” to me – as Erik said. Good guys at work, not the nasties.

I’ve found some of this in a very dry bed just recently and none of the plants are suffering.

All right then! I’m going to call it good, and simply let it be. :-)

I had this all over my beds last spring and ignored it. It’s popped up before on a smaller scale and nothing ever seemed to suffer from it. If it is beneficial fungi then that’s way cool! I add a dose of a beneficial fungi/bacteria combo product to my seedlings around transplant time to help them get established. Maybe it’s doing more than a “placebo effect” after all!
