March 4 - re-potted some seedlings

So, lesson learnt: don`t use your own vermicompost on seedlings (when sowing them).

I have so many voluntary compost tomatoes growing everywhere in all my little seed trays. And some of the dates for sprouting I entered last week, are wrong, as they were tomatoes, and not the actual seeds I`ve sown.

I wanted to start some more tomatoes (from packages I know the source of ) this weekend, but I’ll wait till I can go buy some sterile potting soil.

Some herbs I did re-pot:

- 2 dill, of the 7 seeds I sowed
- 2 chives
- 5 or 6 tiny basil sprouts
- coriander/cilantro (from seeds harvested of my own garden)
- some chard

now, I have to wait and see if I lose some of these to dampening

and, for fun and waste of time, I`ve also transplanted some of the voluntary tomatoes and potted them up separately, just to see into what kind of tomatoes they’ll grow, and if they produce fruit.

This entry is about

Day 15

Aneth / Dill (divided)

Anethum graveolens

Potting Up

Do you use any remedies to prevent damping off? Using weak chamomile tea to water the seedlings or sprinkling the soil with cinnamon really hellps. having a fan blow on them for a few hours a day can also help.

I`ve tried sprinkling cinnamon on the soil around the seedlings last year, after reading some posts and comments about this, but didn`t really notice if that helped with anything.
I`ve heard of the chamomile tea, so I might try that this year.

Can you just brew a batch, and dilute it, and keep it for a few days ? I don`t see myself brewing chamomile tea every time I need to water my plants :)

every year I promise myself I will set up some area, easily accessible, dedicated to growing stuff, where I can easily suspend lights, put a small fan, and etc… put I never quite get to it. So it`s always survival of the fittest in not so great conditions for my poor seedlings.

I did that with the vermicompost one year and had the same results … hundreds of tomato plants! :D

I have done all three, but chamomile tea is the usual. I make a pot with one tea bag and about two cups of water and let it sit for quite a while. Then I mix it with an equal amount of water and put it in a spray bottle. and use it to water the seedlings. I have had no trouble with losing seedlings ever since I started doing this. I have used cinnamon also, but recently wondered if it would inhibit germnation if put on the soil before the seeds had sprouted. I have had comments saying that it could prevent germination and some comments from other gardening friends that say they always mix it into their seed starting mix. (I am trying this right now with some tomato seeds)
