It’s been a hard day. Pebbles, my old dog of 15 years had to be put to sleep this morning. We knew it was coming; she’d been having serious issues breathing for the last five days, and … come on, she was OLD. All the same, letting her go was hard, even though it truly was for the best. Then I went straight from the vet to work, and being there was hard as well. It’s considered unprofessional to bawl at the office.
I’m taking solace in the fact that the sun is out, the air is fresh, and all around me things are growing and renewing. I firmly believe that there is a cycle to all life: human, animal, vegetable, mineral, and we’re all part of it. All connected. All interwoven. Even as one spirit leaves this world, there is spirit all around us. That’s a joyful thing.
And new life is starting from old. I checked my seed pots this moring, and lo! both of my pumpkin varieties had sprouted already. This means the seeds I took from my sugar pumpkins last fall did what they were supposed to do! That’s quite exciting. Satisfying, really. The Winter Luxury pumpkins and Tigger melons have sprouted as well. I just planted all of these on Saturday, so that’s quite a fast turn around, in my opinion.
Life is good. And all life is good. And we come, and we go, and we leave a bit of ourselves behind for the next generation. From dust we are born, and to dust we return. It’s how it should be, and it’s something we should celebrate. This afternoon, out in the sunshine, I celebrate Pebble’s life, her joys, and the joys she brought us.
She was a good dog. She was loved. She’ll be missed.

What a touching, timely post for Ash Wednesday. I am sorry for the loss of your dog. I lost one as well just after Christmas and it is never easy. But I agree that watching the cycle of life continue on in other forms does remind us of the ongoing miracle of all life.

So sorry you lost your beloved Pebbles. She is very like my Nettle whom we lost many years ago now. My last canine companion, though gone for 6 years now, is often with me as I garden – especially when the crab apple breaks dormancy, as this is where she was buried. She lives on in the blossoms, leaves and fruit.

Very sorry for your loss. 15 is a good long number of years to live happily. it sounds like you’re just thinking of the positives, which is good to hear. Stay strong. :)

Sorry for your lost. I lost my pet 40 years ago and buried her myself in the backyard. I wasn’t going to let the city come and cremate her, I loved her to much and wanted her to return to earth. After 35 years I moved back to the house and build my square foot garden on top of her grave. So she will always be a part of my life!
