So the Trip L Crop and San Marzano’s are gone now, too. The rat ate them last night, all while knocking the trap I had set up behind the seedlings over. At this point, I don’t know if I have the time available to restart all the tomatoes. It kills me not to have some tomato plants but with the weather being as unnaturally warm as it is this Spring, I’m afraid the heat and humidity will set in, rendering the pollen useless.
This couldn’t have happened at a worse time, either. Matt left at 715am on a business trip to Chicago. He doesn’t go on business trips, usually, so when he does – it’s difficult for me to say goodbye. That coupled with this rat fiasco was just more than my emotions could handle today…

Aw… sorry you are having such a bad day. I can’t help with Matt & the business trip – but here is Darrel Jones’s website. He is in Alabama (I think about 300m north of you) & has an AMAZING selection of plants. He ships them right to your door & the prices aren’t too bad. He goes by the name Fusion_power on a couple of websites & is always very helpful.

Thanks so much nickyn – it does help. I’ll be ordering at least 3 types from him, for sure :)
I think I’ll be moving the seed starting operation into my spare room this weekend and trying again with a few of the varieties – they {should} flower before the weather takes a turn for the hot, we’ll just have to see. Even if they don’t set fruit, it isn’t as heart-breaking as them being eaten as seedlings…

I’d be so annoyed with the rat.

I think that I sent you Evergreen… The first fruitset on my plant in exactly 60 days – I have it recorded as flowering after 49 days! I have no idea if it was just a weird year, but it was my earliest (also my favourite tasting). You could try a seedling & hope for the early flowers again. Hope it all works out (:

I just got off of a 25 min. phone call with Mr. Jones – what a great guy! I told him what happened and what I was interested in from him and he said, “you don’t need to buy any plants from me, here’s what you do…” and went on to give me all kinds of pointers on growing, the varieties I should choose, and the planting out dates. I’m going to buy some plants from him, regardless – I feel humbled just being able to support people like him, he was such a pleasure to talk to. Thank you SO much for mentioning him to me :)
I’ll soak some evergreen tonight and use the ‘milk-jug’ method Mr. Jones suggested to me for them :)
