Welcome back Folia after the great server migration outage!
We are having our 4th day in a row of usually sunny winter weather. Frosty nights, but blue skies and stunning mountain views, and highs have reached the high 50’s the past 2 days. I still dont get much sun on my north facing hillside, but yesterday walked to Arboretum to enjoy some. Walked around the Joseph Witt Winter Garden, with no coat! I dont think I have ever seen the arboretum looking and smelling as spectacular before.
I must try and find Daphne Bholua ‘Jacqueline Postill’, a spectacular 5 foot tall winter blooming Daphne, shade loving, elegant in form, and so sweet smelling. Adding to my wish list as a ‘must get’.
Other wonderful winter blooming scents in the arboretum now: witch hazel, wintersweet, sweetbox, mahonia, winter hazel, viburnums.
I even saw some pollinators out and about (hoverflies and hummingbirds).
Today is Harvest Day, but the harvest offerings of my winter garden are meagre. A few greens and herbs can be snipped. I have high hopes for purple sprouting broccoli or maybe even rhubarb for March. I decided to snip some rosemary for my salmon on toast this morning—Thank you folia harvest day for this inspiration—it was marvelous. Also gives this big old stalwart, beautiful, and useful to human and hummingbird rosemary a well deserved badge.

How lovely to walk in the arboretum! Maybe I’ll go to the coast just to get a taste of Spring, I am tired of grey skies, and a grey, black and white landscape.

Salmon on toast with rosemary – sounds scrumptious! We’re enjoying blue skies and sunshine too….but haven’t hit double digits (in celsius) yet. Still good enough to be out and about in the garden, making the most of it!

Hi Louise M yes it is!
Rainymountain, i think you would love it on the wet side of the mountains today, but although it feels like spring right now, i think we still probably have at least a month of winter to go.

Had to triple-check you weren’t gardening in England. Ditto here!

Tralamander—I think Pacific Northwest weather is fairly similar to England’s, although we tend to be a bit drier in July and August.

Those witch hazels are spectacular! The Arnold Arboretum in Boston has a variety of yellow-stemmed dogwood that looks just like the ones in your photo, planted alongside red-stemmed dogwood. The vibrant colors provided striking winter interest there too.

The Daphne will eventually reach 13-14 feet. Mine is currently approx. 10 feet tall. The recent snow just about bent it double, a little shake and it whips back into shape no problem. I am currently enjoying its gorgeous scent.
