Decisions, decisions: A Personal Outlook

Sigh…My love for plants is slowly growing into an obsession and I’m highly considering going into the botany/horticulture/agriculture field of profession.

I am a trained artist, now studying business administration, with a passion for culinary arts, crafts, and plants. Where does that fit into anything?

I always thought I could create a hybrid job…but what? What on earth can I do…or sell? I am still so young but I will soon be too old to question my career choices. I just want to stay in school and study my whole life. Learning is so fun. Sigh.

My dream is still to open a cafe eventually, but I think I’m going to explore other options in the meantime. It’s just that I jump around so much and I am so indecisive that I don’t want to have twenty careers before I die.

For those of you with jobs in the general plant field, what do you do exactly? Are you happy? Is it stable, steady?

Can I just live on a farm and make jam and raise sheep without sounding like a crazy lady?

I cannot express how fulfilling it is to be a professional gardener – well, almost professional. I’ve actually been pretending for the past 4 months, turning up voluntarily and working 8.5 hours a day. Then I was lucky to come along at the right time and fit in with a great place, team and project. I’m applying (and very confident about) for a year’s apprenticeship there, during which time I will study for a qualification in practical horticulture, and get paid (a decent, but not massive) salary for my work.
There’s a dfference between practical and botanical horticulture. Practical usually being making and maintaining a garden. And botanical being the scientific study of plants. It is between these two that I cannot decide… though I like outdoor gardening, and couldn’t be in a lab. A greenhouse would be lovely though.

That’s just me though. Driven by an almighty obsession with plants. It drives me to nice places though.

And if you find the right man, he’ll support you in making jam and raising sheep, :)
