nom nom nom.

First strawberry of the season! Yay.

Think I could have left it another day but it was delicious! I’ll reserve my final verdict on this species for a while yet.

I can smell the ocean, feel the warm rays of the sun on my back, hear the children playing and taste freshly picked strawberries. Summer is definitely on its way!

Time to start working on that tan.

This entry is about

Day 74

Strawberry 'Hokowase'

Fragaria x ananassa

    :) Thanks guys
@AnneTanne- what was the matter with it? Not warm enough?
@ Tralamander- fingers crossed they seem to be blind to strawberries so far! They love grapes though!
@Lilly- indeed! :) nom nom nom
@Russell- lol no my partner in crime insists on head to toe PPE when I’m gardening since I have no sense of self protection. Besides walking around wantonly in the sun is how you get burnt, not tanned! :)
@Armorel- I agree! I’ve been clucking around it for days!
@Dogs- awww maybe you have a disease or something in your plants? Thanks- I certainly will but I am lucky because there is a clear genetic difference in my family. The lily whites as we call them burn like crazy and get skin cancers all the time. The Golden children as we call ourselves don’t burn, but tan almost to black and never seem to get cancers. Yay for genes. Despite this though I am very careful to never get burnt – pre tanning for summer is essential! I believe too much concern over the sun is just as bad for you as too little. Any way that’s a whole nother story.

Cheers guys. And na na na na na. :P

Just to chime in on the skin cancer bit, there’s NO such thing as a safe tan, both burning and tanning are linked to skin cancer – links are more clear cut for sunburn, and yes, fairer people are typically more susceptible, but people who tan are susceptible as well – tanning is a sign of skin damage. Apart from the skin cancer, it’ll also give you more wrinkles later on. A-hem, now I’ll step off the soap box. Glad you’re enjoying your first strawberry of the season – certainly worth savouring.

Studies also show 70% of Australians are Vitamin D deficient. Yes- 70%! Vitamin D is actually anti cancer, and is required for healthy mood, immune function and healthy aging. It’s about balance I believe. :) Both sides of this pancake can now be left to rest here now I think. Too many soapboxes ha hahaha.. :)

Thanks tho definitely a great day in the garden! I’m gonna go see if any more are ready now….yay!

@ Tralamander- no bird problems yet but definitely an issue with Portuguese millipedes. They had infested all 4 ripe ones this morning. I had no idea they did that! To think I have previously defended them against death and torture by others! grrrr….
