Peppers and tomatoes are really responding to these last few days of sunshine – butternut squash too, though only male flowers have opened so far. They were beginning to trail out onto the path so had to make a hasty bit of support from what I had to hand – a couple of off-cut strips of weldmesh, some sections of frame work of a blowaway, canes and string. It isn’t pretty and it’s not what I’d intended but will have to do for this year. I still have a strong framework – used for sugar snaps, in the old garden down at the farm – which I need to dismantle and transport up here, to put in place for next season.
Yesterday I gave the corn, cucumber and squash bed a good soaking, allowing the hose to trickle for several hours with frequent position changes. Today it was the bean and celery bed’s turn.
Also had no option yesterday but set to with the mower once again – the place was getting distinctly jungly – another one and a half hours. Some of the clippings went into the deep box bed with a modest scattering of old soil from emptied pots.
After supper, when the sun had gone down, I sat in the cooling twilight garden, the merest breath of air stirring my hair, watching moths flitting about and finding the buddleja. Then came the bats, dropping out from under the eaves of the cottage to swoop and dive around the garden in search of food. A perfect, relaxing way to end the day.

What a delight to read! Had to chuckle on you building supports for squash from whatever was to hand as I know that scenario all to well. (At some point, I’m going to take a photo of the tomato shelter I “built” this year: from left over plumbing pipes. It’s bordering on “Heath Robinson”.) I’m interested to read that you grow celery as I’ve tried once and gave up as it was so bitter. Lack of water or something? Any tips?
Can’t finish without saying how wonderful your description of sitting in the twilight garden was: so evocative! I can almost aspy the moths, feel the light breeze and hear and see the bats.

It was particularly lovely that evening sitting out as there was hardly any traffic going past and even small sounds could be heard and enjoyed.
LouiseM – this is my first time for celery so fingers crossed! I think they are benefiting from the light shade of the runner (pole) beans which helps keep the soil moist, even though they themselves have quite high water needs. Proof of the pudding later on!
Laurieann – I’m not growing jalapenos – label on the pot says Sweet Chocolate – not grown them before. Have I muddled up the labels or they usually this shape do you know? I was imagining bell shaped. I am growing some Marconi which are long, pointy red ones and at this stage they are looking similar. Time will tell I suppose.

I just looked up some pics of them on the internet and they do end up being a bell shape – but longer than a classic bell pepper. These could certainly still grow in that direction – it’s just that they look exactly like my early jalapenos at this stage.
I am growing celery this year for the first time as well – Red Venture – they are really lovely. I should do a post about them!

Ooh yes do that – any tips would be appreciated. Mine were in their modules longer than ideally so don’t know how this will have affected them. They are Golden Self Blanching.
