Experimented today planting some pansy ‘waterfall’ in amongst a couple of short rows of onions. According to Jackie French (gardening author and guru), they’re a good companion plant – they insulate the soil and keep the weeds away.
I had always thought that onions didn’t like any competition – which is why they need to be kept well weeded – so I’m not sure how they cope with the competition from pansies – but if it’s good enough for Jackie French, then I’m happy to give it a try, especially if it reduced the weeds. If nothing else, I’ll have one of the prettiest plots in the allotment.
