I think what plants we like mostly has to do with our experiences and associations. Woolly Blue Curls, particularly their scent, remind me of happy days hiking in the mountains of California and Baja, and of my beautiful California native plant garden in my San Diego backyard. So they may not look like much to most people, but to me they contain a whole world of memories. And, for the first time since moving to Seattle 17 years ago, I have four blooming in my garden!
Summer in Seattle, such as it is, sort of started about 2 months ago, since it stopped raining hard in mid May. I have had to water everything non drought tolerant at least weekly. It still hasn’t gotten warm though, and it has been cool and drizzly enough that the natural areas have stayed brilliant green . Most days begin gray and cloudy, with a sweater needed. They often end glorious though, when the cloud layer burns off. Now in July we still struggle to make it into the mid 70’s by late afternoon. There is way too much snow in the high mountains for any serious hiking, but we have been doing lots of nice hikes at lower elevations.

I’ve never seen wolly blue curls.
But you’re right. (For the same reason I love a winter flower – Calycanthus praecox – and its scent).

Wooly blue curls is such a lovely name I’d want to grow it just for that. But yes, the memories are what makes a plant special, as is the one at the top of my bloom day list.
Some gorgeous blooms you have – I covet the electric orange rose and blue penstemon particularly.

You’re an San Diego transplant as well? There are a lot of plants I miss from that area, I admit it, but I also truly love how green it stays up here. That’s why I came to the PNW … the green.

I like that Wooly Blue Curls. I haven’t seen anything like it here on the East Coast. Despite the weather woes (and trust me we have had our own here!). your garden looks beautiful and lush! Good work! I just planted Epilobium in my garden as a small WS seedling so I was delighted to see yours is very lovely. And this is the second year for my Phlomis which I understand will bloom the third year.
