I thought i was jumping the gun when i started some of my tomato seeds on march 1. I really thought so when the plants were so big and hard to manage at planting out time. But all the tomatoes I started then are growing well, and flowering, even the Siletz that got its stem broken. None of the ones i started 2 weeks later are flowering yet. So March 1 it will be again!
Notes for next time:
start in 4" pots in beginning march, then move to 1 gallon pots in beginning april, begin hardening off in early May, plant outside in mid may. Each time transplanted, strip off lower leaves and plant very low to encourage root development. Add a short stake to the gallon pot to prevent stem damage as plants get large and otherwise stems may break when hardening off . Protect from cold winds with wall of water or plastic sheet until late may.

Yes, this is the garden for plants that like sun, rich soil, regular water. None of my other plants get such pampering.

I was feeling the same way when my grow room was bursting with tomatoes, tomatillos and peppers and it ws too cold to plant them out. But now that they are planted out they look GREAT – so healthy and growing like gangbusters! Please, please, please, let us have a long summer so I don’t have to make so much green tomato chutney this year!

I’ll third the early tomato starting experience. Had a much more experienced gardener friend come by yesterday and rave about how good my tomato plants look. It was so nice to be able to claim all but one of them came from seed.

I started on January 15th this year on a 45F sunporch with florescent lights, and moved them to the Greenhouse on March 1st at 45F with Halide growlights, then to the Hoop-house on April 15th. I usually start tomatoes and peppers on February 15th. My plants were 24" to 28" tall in 1-quart pots, so they required staking with skewers. I may start Peppers again in January, but Tomatoes are going to wait until Mid-February. One thing is evident; with weekly feeding with 20-20-20, I can start later with the same size plants.
