Time to transplant the started seeds. The watermelon and ‘New England’ pumpkin seeds didn’t sprout. ‘Piment d’Espelette’ pepper and ‘Winter Luxury’ pumpkin did (at least I think it was Winter Luxury. I was too lazy to label properly).

I really hate that chore and usually put it off, at the peril of the sprouts. I did it about on time this time, though. This year I have definitely noticed how much better plants grow when you pot them up a size at the proper time. I have loads of tomatoes planted at the same time and those that were potted up early already have fruits that’ll be ready in a couple weeks. The other ones are weaker and still only flowering. Much further behind in development.

I took my tree tape and lashed the ‘Charentais’ to the trellis because the new “arms” were sprawling across the bed rather than trying to grow upright. Same with the ‘Crystal Apple’ cucumber although those are a little more inclined to grow up the trellis. I also tied up any tomatoes that had bits that had grown tall enough to be staked further. I need to go back and do that to my snow peas, which need another level of lashing.

Discovered more squirrel damage. They picked yet another aprium and hid it. Picked it early, too. They seem to be hitting the strawberries, too. The quality of the ‘Aromas’ fruit is bad. One seems to be diseased. The others, if they reach maturity without the squirrels or birds or slugs getting them, develop a so-so flavor. I guess I should really be careful about UC varieties given that that breeding program is really geared towards commercial farmers who care a lot more about ability to withstand shipping than they do about taste.
