Gopher Wars 2011

Tuesday, 03 May 11 21°C / 69°F

Our defense strategy:

1) Indeterminate tomato civilians to be protected in 8" raised beds constructed from garden timbers. 1/4" hardware cloth attached to the bottom to serve as lining.

2) Determinate tomato civilians to be protected in large plastic pots (with many holes drilled.)

Our offensive strategy:
1) County pest control regularly
2) Traps
3) Ariel

Dynamite. Oh wait that didn’t work on CaddyShack either. ;-) I am so fortunate not to have these critters.
    What is Ariel?
I had muskrats in a pond when I lived in Ohio. They were undermining everything. One day I couldn’t take it anymore and I went nuts and got out a little .22 long barrel target pistol. I shot and hit one. Dead. The others came and hauled it away. I couldn’t believe it. I was devastated watching their ritual of burying their dead. I had no idea. I still carry the guilt. My grown kids also like to remind me of it.

@Cruiser: Ariel is a stray kitty that has adopted us. Sweet as she is, she is a voracious hunter. Muskrats? Eww. I had no idea that they buried their dead.

@N20863: Caddy Shack jokes are standard fare around here. I am seriously considering calling the Rodentator folks: http://tinyurl.com/3jl9hct If the device wasn’t $1700, I would like one for myself; the video makes the work look very satisfying! That is some superior firepower!
