Farmer Steve told me there’s only one thing to do about the weather: complain about it. Since I did that on the discussion thread, I won’t repeat it here beyond saying (for future reference) that the weather has been insane with raging storms, sweeping temperature drops and soaring highs, blazing sun, high winds, fog and occasional frost. Often all within the course of a day. All. month. long.
Today I weeded most of the front yard and the orchard, in spite of the near 90 heat and humidity. Ground was too waterlogged to plant most stuff, but we did get the coleus into the hydrangea bed. With luck and an early rise, I should be able to get the tomatoes in tomorrow.
Strawberries are well on their way to fruiting. Plums, cherry and half the apple trees are setting fruit. I see that I need to tip back several apples to encourage some lateral branching.
No Rabbits Allowed garden was inundated with water, the trenches are still full (at least they keep the water out of the beds). Don’t know when I’m going to be able to finish planting beans and corn there. I need waders.
Note to self: pick up Summit mosquito pellets (Bti kills larvae, organic approved).
Still need to get bone meal or rock phosphate to finish off the complete organic fertilizer batch.
Tendinitis has kicked into high fear in left hand/arm. It’s bad this time. I’m fighting through it, as per usual, but must seek extra help this time. Headed to doc to talk about pain management and get a specialist referral for cortisone shots. For now: ice, ibuprofen and codeine.
Photos:
1. Bean beds soaked
2. 2 sisters bed south, soaked. Guess I won’t be needing that hose.
3. Asparagus trenches drained pretty well 24 hours later
4. Potato trenches not too wet, time for more hilling
5. Established plants are loving all the rain. Here: Becki’s hosta.
