Do you think I need to re-pot this ficus microcarpa?

My only bonsai, I’ve had her for around 5 years.

She’s got some new roots that I’m worried about damaging… see photos.

but I think 5 years might be too long with the same soil and only liquid fertilisers and an occasional pellet of slow release fertiliser?

It still looks healthy to me but I don’t have much experience with bonsai and I want it to stay that way, what do you think? Worth the risk of a trip down to Lees Bonsai Emporium where Lee can put her in a bigger pot for me?

    Cheers

I re-pot my ficus trees every other summer. When you do it, use a fairly aerated soil (something like this: http://www.hollowcreekbonsai.com/item204928.ctlg mixed 1:1 with potting soil).

When you do the re-pot, you probably want to prune 1/4 to 1/3 of the root ball off the bottom anyway. It will help encourage new root growth. Expect to lose some leaves (up to 1/4 of what you currently have) based on my experience.

I usually re-pot during the summer just because they tend to recover best at that time of year.

Let me know if I didn’t explain any of this well!

  • okay thanks that’s great info, but I’m too afraid of loosing it to do it myself, I think. When I have a few, so I’m less attached, I will learn how to do it myself.

I will take her to Lees Bonsai World next week! Thank you kindly!

Other than that you didn’t see any problems with my ficus?

    Cheers, Mel
