Ginger? Any tips?

I bought a ginger root from a market stall yesterday, then planted in a way I thought was sensible… 2 parts (very fine – not fibrous at all) multi-purpose compost to one part perlite, with sprouts pointing upwards. It’s in a ventillated greenhouse, which gets very warm as it is summer.

I wonder if anyone else has tried growing ginger from rhizomes, and failed, succeeded or has any advice.

    Thank you. :)

It’ll be interesting to see how it develops! I’ve never tried to grow one myself.

Thank you, Amarylis. I decided to try ginger because Taro (Colocasia esculenta) worked out for me. It was sold very cheap as a tuber in a local market, and this is the result after 3 months – not much, but the rootball underneath is HUGE! It’s a gorgeous plant, so I do recommend having a go. :)

I would be a very happy girl if this works for you. I LOVE ginger. I’ll keep an eye on this – but sorry I don’t have any experience to share. But I did find this on growing ginger.

I pulled it finally & used about 1/2 of the rhizomes over the last month. I saved the 2 bits that had green growth & replanted them. This summer they have a little 3×2′ garden box with lots of compost. I will have to pull the plants in the fall & bring them inside again. Luckily they look nice as indoor plants.

    Good luck!

I started growing culinary ginger about two years ago. I now have 3 plants in different parts of the garden. When I need to use ginger I dig carefully and snap a small piece and leave the plant to keep growing. Since I live in zone 9a my ginger stays in the ground year round. The plant dies back if it gets really cold and then makes a come back around May. I can harvest at any time during the year. I have not fertilized it, except with worm tea. Ginger grows good in a container, keeping in mind that the roots need room to grow. My original plant was purchased in a container.

I’m convinced I’ll grow some and keep it inside during the winter now.

Thank you so much, everyone! :)
    Fhaith, I bookmarked your journal.

Here’s my plant, and the sprout has changed colour and grown since planting… hopefully a good sign..

Funny that you made this post! I tried growing ginger about a month ago—I stuck one rhizome directly in the ground, and one in a little pot. Both of them ended up rotting. Maybe my ginger wasn’t fresh enough? Do let us know about your progress! I definitely want to try this again soon.

If this is the one you refer to the applause goes to nickyn!

The only ginger success I have had is with eating it, and making pickled ginger. In which I’d like to do more of both!

Thank you very much Fhaith and nickyn. Great journal, but a shame it didn’t work out for you. Good luck in future. :)

You know I can’t stop. I found this today. For those who wonder I am a nutrition coordinator by profession.

Hi there! You're reading a conversation in the Kitchen Gardens group on Folia.

Welcome to the Kitchen Gardeners Group! The main topic here is growing food ~ vegetables, herbs, fruit, grains, and even the flowers we tuck in between.

Other things that would be appropriate are discussions about harvesting, cooking, heirlooms, potagers (both modern and historical), season extenders (greenhouses, cold frames), wine/beer-making, and the politics of food. This list certainly isn’t all-inclusive, so if you think it’ll fit here, it probably will.
