Lady's Legs (Tropaeolum pentaphyllum)

Has anyone had any success with this plant here in UK?
After seeing these in flower on the web a few years ago and imagining them climbing the back wall of the conservatory I thought they would be an interesting challenge from seed.

One germinated and grew a lot of quite attractive foliage which reached a particular point then died down so I gave it a drying off period then stated it off again. It grew fresh abundant foliage again but no sign of flowers. By the third year I had a sizeable tuber, repotted, which cycled through a growing and dry off period again. Each cycle brought more foliage but no sight of a flower bud. Unfortunately I didn’t make notes so this is just what I remember After one more cycle I gave up on it but it nags me – what was I doing wrong?
Is it just not suited to growing in this country? Does it need to flower just when we are getting less daylight and warmth? I don’t know.

It’s certainly different, isn’t it?
I haven’t grown it but Tropaeolum is the nasturtium family (literally “nose-twister” or “nose-tweaker”) and I have a small apparently yellow flowered species that I grew from seed but I can’t remember it’s name. It’s never flowered and it has small tubers with the rather spindly plant having light green leaves that twist their leaf stems around the support which is quite an unusual way of climbing.
Canary Creeper is a nasturtium too (Tropaeolum peregrinum).
Why not contact a botanical garden like Kew and ask some questions about this plant? If they don’t have it, then perhaps they might know of another garden that grows it and you might get some answers. -

That’s gorgeous, one of a fascinating group of tiny, delicate tropaoleums (tropaolea/i?)
Kew Gardens grows Tropaeolum brachyceras and T tricolor in its alpine house.

Nose-tweaker – I wonder how that name came to be! Love it Armorel.
Your T. tricolor pics show foliage exactly like my pentaphyllum Tralamander and the flower shape is similar. Do you remember what time of year it was flowering?

Very interesting question, seeingreen! Unfortunately I don’t don’t know the answer either! :-(( I have however grown the common or garden Nasturtium, T.majus, & I’ve also grown the Canary Creeper, which I liked a lot. It’s flowers are much smaller & delicate then T.majus. The leaves look nothing like those we normally associate with Nasturtiums. The flowers are small & a bright Canary yellow, lovely little things! Yet even these can grow several metres in a single season!
