Hoop House

Does anyone know where I would get plastic to make the frame for a hoop house in the UK (Scotland)

Try a B&Q Store chain. I’m pretty sure they sell a full range of PVC pipe & fittings.

Thanks hotwired. I did look at B&Q online but they only seem to sell the pipe in 3m lengths which wouldn’t be long enough, unless it would be ok to join the lengths together? I have an area which is 20ft long and I can bring it out to about 5ft maybe 6ft maximum, I have no idea what length of pipe I would need and my pythagoras isn’t great to work it out!! I will take a trip to B&Q at some point next week I think to check it out :))

I’m not sure how big a selection B&Q has in Scotland. I would use PVC fittings down the center. In the US we have Tees and Cross Fittings.
You can use Rebar to drive into the ground and slide the hoop ends over to keep the hoop positioned correctly. I rip PVC in half on a table saw and use it to clamp the Plastic Sheeting to the hoops. Clamping the Plastic to the PVC will keep it from ripping in the wind.
You can do the same thing to build row covers for raised beds. -

so, just looking at the images of the row covers, a 4ft(48") wide bed would need a 7ft(84") pipe? what height would that give? I can’t get the maths of it and don’t want to waste money buying the wrong lengths!
As for the hoop house, I would like that to be about 5-6ft in height but not sure what width that would be either….. Maybe I will just buy huge pipes and bend them till I get the right height and cut them to size!! lol My head hurts now thinking of all these numbers!!
I really need to do something for next year because all of this rubbish Scottish weather (2weeks of solid sun at 20-25c followed by the last 3wks of downpours and temperatures down at 5c) is really not doing my plants any favours and I can’t afford £500, which is the cheapest I can find, for a decent sized greenhouse :( -

The 3/4" PVC pipe sells for $1.90USD for 10 foot (3 meters @ €1.36 or £1.16). On a 48" wide bed, the 84" would give you 24" above the frame. A 10’ length would give you a center height of 42" high.
The PVC will bend but unlike metal, when you let loose of it it returns to straight. That’s why you need to use Rebar to hold the shape. If you figure out how wide you want your hoophouse, I’ll calculate the pipe lengths for you. -

OK, I have a space of 20ft long and 5ft wide but I wanted to put 2 raised beds with pathways in between and the hoop house in this space. I have attached a super technical drawing!!!! ;p lol
Thanks again hotwired I really appreciate your help

And this is the actual garden. I know there is loads more space but I have 6 kids and I don’t think they would like me to take any more of their space!!

@minxy83 … With 6 kids how do you find time to garden — or sleep? I should have asked how big you want the raised beds? Here’s two at “3′×5′ with 24” walkways":http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/1931/minxy83garden.jpg. I use Solidworks 3D CAD and Studio Max 3D, so I can design you a hoophouse really easy. With two 60 cm wide walkways, and 600 cm length available, then there’s 480 cm to divide up among 2 raised beds and a hoop house. With two raised beds, each at 100cm, there 280 cm for a hoophouse or 1.5m wide x 2.8m long. Let me know the size of Raised beds and I’ll post plans for the hoop-house based on 60cm wide walkways.

oh I meant to say I would like about 5ft height for the hoop house if that’s possible, a little higher or lower would be fine too :))

You can also use Top Rail…. the top pipe on chain link fences….. it can be bent and makes perfect hoops for a coldframe/ greenhouse. My students are making smaller ones over raised beds and we are bending 1/2" conduit for our hoops and covering them with white plastic. Very easy to do. Hope it goes well for you!!!
