Clear Plastic Drink Cups
-
I have three little Cypress vine seedlings in my greenhouse tray, that are about too tall to stay in there. Unfortunately, they start curling up shortly after I take the top off of the tray for watering, so I think they would completely freak out if I transplanted them and didn’t cover them up. I am now saving some of those clear plastic cups that Starbucks and Tim Horton’s serves iced coffee drinks in, so that I can put them over my vine seedlings after they are transplanted. I’m hoping that the cups will help keep things humid and warm, so the little plants don’t freak out when they get moved out of the tray.

I cut the bottoms off of 2 liter soda bottles and put them over some melon seedlings to keep the birds out. I also put a small bamboo stakes through the middle (where the cap goes) to keep the wind from knocking them down. Worked great!

I thought about the clear plastic pop bottles, but I just don’t drink enough pop to get the number of bottles I would need for this week. I’m planning on saving some for last year, because one of my vines is already too big for the large cup I am using.
I suspect that the really big clear Slurpee cups you can get here would work pretty well too.

@dana_bee, I have the same problem. I don’t drink soda, but would love a source of 2-liter bottles to use are radiant heating in my greenhouse. So that rules out the recycle center, because I want caps too.

I had the same problem, of needing the 2-liter bottles, but not supplying them myself. I asked on my local free cycle, I mentioned it to several friends, and hit up some other local lists. It was a matter of days before I had well over a hundred to cover my needs.

Yes, I have been bugging friends of mine. By this time next year I expect I will have enough.

The other option for large easy to cut plastic containers is local school cafeterias and restaurants. They carry salad dressings, etc. in gallon sized containers. Some are clear some are like milk jugs – which I’ve used too. I transitioned my Rosemary cuttings in the garden and covered with these mini greenhouses. They work great.
