caterpillars

  • dianelouv 158 plants Mexico11

We’ve had a variety of these awesome giant caterpillars with which I have no experience. Today there were three eating my grape vine. Not sure I need help unless someone knows the name of this critter, just wanted to share.

    Beautiful photo!
I think it’s either the Privet or the Poplar hawk moth. :)

  • Yeah hawk vine moth :) Like this “http://myfolia.com/journals/103161-the-biggest-caterpillar-i-have-ever-seen-what-on-earth-is-it-”

I was freaked when I saw so many but they disappeared quickly without causing much damage to my (at that stage) heavily leaved grape vines. :)

Let me see if I can add another photo showing the tail. It looks different than the hawk moths because, no tail. And it’s fully developed.

Here’s another. This is the wiki site for the hawk moth. It appears to live across the ocean from us. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippotion_celerio I see another large moth and haven’t seen one that resembles that one. I may go to the U of Colima and see what info they have.

Yes, I was freaked out the first time I saw them quite this big in the Olive tree. Should have taken a pic as it was different. They are so beautiful, I hate to kill them. Will wait to see what happens. It’s been a long rainy season this year so there are many.
