Companions for cucumbers

  • startide_rising 96 plants United States8b

The book “How to Grow Vegetables” (John Jeavons) lists the following companions for cucumbers: beans, corn, peas, radishes, sunflowers, and lettuce. It also lists the following antagonists: potatoes, aromatic herbs.

I haven’t grown a lot of cucumbers myself, but I was thinking about growing some this summer. I had them growing away from the other plantings since they generally need room, but I am thinking that now I will try to grow it near my corn and sunflowers and let the cucumber vines run in between my garden squares.

My companion list also mentions, as companions: cabbage, dill, eggplant, nasturtium, tomato, onions. As antagonists it mentions sage and potatoes.

Cucumbers, like most cucurbits, like a bit of light shade which is why they like sunflowers and sweetcorn. I plant my cucumbers between my sweetcorn and use the stems of the sweetcorn as natural canes to train the cucumbers up.
Radishes are pretty good to grow nearby as they discourage cucumber beetles.
I’ve always found cucumbers pretty easy to grow. However, one year I planted them in amongst my fruit bushes and they did really badly.

I had cukes growing up my mammoth sunflowers last year. it worked out quite well. I also had the cukes growing up on a small cage, and underneath i started carrots. Worked out lovely, as the cucumbers were finishing off and thinning, the carrots shined.

Hi there! You're reading a conversation in the Companion planting group on Folia.

Let’s talk about which plants like each other, and which don’t. We could for example exchange ideas and experiences about plants that enhance each other’s growth and flavor. Or we could talk about which plants go well together in a veg or flower border.
