columbine in spring
-
It’s early spring here in my zone 6a garden and the columbine are doing well. I’m finding really large crowns of Kristall and Lime Sorbet and am thrilled. Smaller crowns of the rest but they’ve done well over a winter with very little snow cover so I’m still very pleased.
The pots of columbine I wish to use for seed production overwintered in the garage nicely. I brought them all out yesterday and think every single one is doing well.
2012 is shaping up to be a wonderful year for columbine. Now… if only there was a badge… (It’s a great idea Mamabluestem and I hope one might come our way very soon.)

These are my old trusted columbines that reseed and grow in the garden every spring.

My existing blue flowered, variegated leaf ones are just opening. There are seedlings all around, some like the parent, some green leafed. I also have some Mckana to flower for the first time this year (a couple have been bunny nibbled) so looking forward to seeing how they turn out. Now I know how easy they are from seed I’ve done some browsing and discovered so many other varieties I’d like to try – deciding and limiting which is hard.

Hi there! You're reading a conversation in the Columbine group on Folia.
Commonly called columbine or granny’s bonnets, this is a group for anyone growing (or wanting to grow) species and hybrids of Aquilegia.
My grandmother used to call them ‘dancing fairies of the garden’. What a beautiful name for a beautiful plant.
