Interesting story about tomato genetics
-
There is a story in npr today about one reason supermarket tomatoes have no taste. Apparently a gene that gives flavor and sweetness also causes green shoulders. In this weeks Science, it was reported that
in the 30’s a grower noticed some tomatoes with the trait of uniform ripening, and modern varieties are all selected for this quality. Unfortunately this is achieved at the expense of flavor.3 thumbs up!Posted 11 months ago -
I listened to this story, it was interesting! I’ve also heard from every person I know over 30 that tomatoes from the big grocery stores just don’t taste like they do when you grow your own heirloom varieties.
I’m horribly allergic to them, but I can’t help but admire them!

The marketing in these, from what I understand, stems from the drive for developing a tomato that transports across the country without going bad. Another reason to buy and eat local foods. So they’ve developed a tomato for selling, but lost its integrity as a tomato. I rarely buy them from the grocery store. It’s just not worth spending my money for a flavorless tomato.

I listened to this story early this week on my ipod. I love ‘the Salt’ podcast. Like Fhaith I can’t remember the last time I bought a supermarket tomato. Long Live Green Shoulders!!!!!

This pale supermarket tom (bought by DS) sat on a table in the sun for nearly 3 weeks without visibly changing at all. On cutting it open this is what I found – germinating seeds. Tom was definitely not decaying, which I thought was necessary for the breakdown of the inhibitory seed coating, so what else are they doing to these not-truly-tomatoes?

@Seeingreen, I wonder if you would start to grow these if Kelly from Monsanto marketing would grow as a hybrid Kelly tomato…. okay – bad joke that involves real people. Cheap shot but kind of funny.

I just tried a Kumato—the brown tomato being heavily marketed these days as having taste. It did have some flavor—mostly sweetness. Still lacking the complexity of many heirlooms, and not “tomatoey” in flavor. The skin is very tough. But its popularity does show that some people are catching on that uniformly red supermarket tomatoes have no flavor, and are willing to buy other colors for flavor.
