Asparagus in South Florida

  • gkratz 49 plants United States10b

I was in Lowe’s yesterday, and discovered that they were selling some really good fruit and veggie plants at really good prices – things like Meyer lemon trees for $19, key lime trees for $12, and veggies at an average of $3 apiece. So I got carried away, and bought a Valencia orange tree, a papaya, some cherry tomatoes, sweet potatoes, muscadine grapes – and two containers of asparagus. I was sorely tempted by the Russell Avocado and ice cream mango, but I managed to avoid those temptations.

Then I did the research, and discovered that asparagus does not normally grow in Florida. Then the question arose – can they be container grown? Would it be possible to plant them in, say, 1 × 2 foot flats, put them in a refrigerator for the winter, and eventually produce something edible?

I suspect the answer will be “no”, but I wonder if anyone here has any experience growing asparagus, and any wisdom to impart…

Dead silence. Hmm, guess not. Guess it’s time to set up an experiment.

I also bought some bare root asparagus. I too, did my research after the fact. I too, planned on doing my own experiment, but I forgot where I put them. This very week, like you, I planned on planting my asparagus. If I don’t find them, at least I’ll have your experiment to look to. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi there! You're reading a conversation in the Southeast Florida Gardening Group group on Folia.

Since South Florida gardeners march to a different beat than most gardeners in the continental US and even North or Central Florida, it’d be nice to have a place where we could come together and share our experiences gardening in this subtropical climate. It would be nice to know what has or hasn’t worked for others in this region and where we find certain plants/seeds/gardening supplies locally or online. Does anyone know about an interesting gardening event coming up or do you have a plant that you’d like to share? What kind of pests are we encountering and where can we get free horse manure?

There’s a lot that we can share with each other, so let’s do it! Let’s encourage and possibly inspire others in our area too!

Even though this is a group geared specifically to Southeast Florida, everyone is welcomed, whether you are in another part of Florida, the US or the world!
