Wow - what a day (and a half!)
-
Well… we made it in the end, but was a bit of a struggle to get here. So here’s a brief run down of what happend:
- At 10am I turned outside access to the servers off and started backing up the database (just in case anything happend). Did a quick tidy of loose files and started off the data hosting migration process. From previous upgrades and resizes I assumed that this would be relatively quick (hence my initial 1 hour guesstimate)
- The first server (Mint – our Search/Jobs/Backup/Email server) started the moment I pressed the button (Which was a good sign). Then nothing happened… for 2 hours.
- 2 hours in the second server started the migration process (Fennel – our Database server). The second server took roughly 4 hours to migrate, and is one of our largest servers, the Folia database alone is 4Gb in size, so this became our yard stick for how long the following two servers would take.
- From here on we started asking our data providers what was happening, and it became apparent that we were in a very long queue of other server migrations. It was an open chatroom so a lot of other people were coming in and asking similar questions. Some of them had been waiting for hours (even days) to have their migrations prioritised. It was this time we feared that we would be offline for the whole weekend.
- After 13 hours we were in a bit of a huff and managed to get one of the engineers to “force migrate” our two remaining servers. Much to no avail. They remained in the queue for another 10 hours.
- 17 hours in Mint initiated an automatic shut down (suggesting it completed). Apparently this was a false alarm and was just entering a mysterious “Phase 2”
- 23 hours into pressing the migration button Thyme (our proxy server) and Basil (our application server) started migrating.
- 25 hours in Mint performed another reset and had indeed finished the migration. We were just waiting for Basil to finish.
- 28 hours in Basil finally migrated. A few tests and we’re back online.
So that’s the rundown – mostly us waiting for things to happen. We updated the maintenance page to highlight the progress better and to explain the situation a little clearer. We didn’t want people to think that with the site being offline for so long that we somehow lost your data.
It was a migration process completely out of our control and so poorly handled by our hosting provider. Which is terrible considering that it was a migration that we didn’t have a choice for. I would have been happy to not migrate, but if that was the case it would have happened automatically in a few days time with unknown consequences.
I was hoping that but setting the migration day that we would have been better accommodated for but that wasn’t the case. We pride ourselves on good support and accessible site with very little down time, but this weekend’s outage has dented that.
All we can do is apologise and hope to make it up to you in the near future.

We appreciate everything you and Nic do! Working in IT I can totally sympathize with doing a migration. Thanks for the updates!

Well, welcome back! I’m glad to see that you managed to migrate all 4 servers. It’s understandable that you should be upset about the way your hosting company has behaved, you’d have thought they would have been a lot more responsible & done everything a lot faster, especially when the migration date was set beforehand.
I logged in several times during the day & I must say I appreciated your Twitter feeds on the progress. This has been the only time when I wished I was signed up to Twitter!
Thank you for all your hard work which is very much appreciated! Glad you are back! :-))

Thanks Nath for the updates during this process! It was a relief knowing that nothing was wrong and our data was safe. With that peace of mind, having the site down is only a minor inconvenience.

That sounds a lot like having a baby.
Congratulations.
May these rest of your relationship with the new host be full of joyous and prompt interactions!

You must be beat. You have nothing to apologise for, but it sounds like the ‘landlord’ sure does. Forced migration, grr.
I am just grateful that you DID close down to prevent loss of any of Folia’s goodies. We all know horror stories of years of work gone, vanished.
Thank you for the running updates, though it made for some truly unbelievable reading! And thank you for taking such pains both with this enormous event and everything else here.

Your care and concern, via updates through the migration process, was very much appreciated. Every time I checked in to still find the “we’re down” screen, I could feel your pain! Thanks for all you guys do, and because of it, we have no problem tolerating these unforeseen episodes. :D

Sounds like a vexatious day for you but your approach is much appreciated by this particular Folia-addict. Love the server names BTW, although on reflection maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise that ‘Mint’ was the least ‘“controllable” and ’Basil’ was the last to “germinate”!! :D

Thanks for putting so much time and energy into this site and its migration. I hope that you get some rest and relaxation now the migration is complete. Absolutely no apologies are necessary, being gardeners we are all patient enough to wait for things to happen and know that nothing is under our complete control. Thanks for the twitter updates. And MANY, MANY THANKS for a great website and such responsive attention to us journalers.

Really nothing to apologise for – though I really appreciated knowing what was going on during the downtime. I hope you both have a chilled evening after all that frustration! =)

Great job in keeping us posted. Although my “MyFolia” withdrawl symptoms were very pronounced! :)
Good work, thanks for everything!

Ah, Nic & Nath, great work and I endorse everything that others have already posted.
And the good news is that a few little discrepancies that I had have been “straightened” out.
I can even see all my Bloom Day medals and “Other Recent Topics” which used to be all jumbled up and unreadable!

Your hair tearing weekend of frustration is hugely appreciated. I’m all too aware of how often a 5 minute job becomes an hour so I can understand the annoyance of that happening on such a big scale with an enforced migration. Hope your wits are intact after all that. Thanks as always for all that you do for us all.
