And now the first part of our updates! (Yes there’s another goody to follow this one!)

We’ve just introduced the version 1.0 of our Communal Plant Database/Wiki. Now everyone can add and correct plant info like sowing depth, light requirements and pH levels. Since we already have so many garden experts with a whole range of expertise (medicinal herbs, orchids, zen gardens ;) I’m sure we’ll have heaps of useful info in no time!

You will now also find on your own planting page a Care Instructions tab. This will link directly to the communal Plant Database/Wiki and show you the general care instructions for your plant…provided that your plant has been classified properly (see, we told you there would be a good reason to classify!). We’ve got lots more planned for this section, and we’ll reveal more about this very soon.

Think of the wiki as very much a first draft – we’ve put in place some very basic info to get this started off but we would love your feedback and suggestions to help us develop the wiki in the right direction.

This is excellent, lots of potential and congratulations on really taking things on to provide an intelligent and practical site. No doubt questions and suggestions will flood in – I have one of each. Firstly are you monitoring the information that is put in? With the best will in the world we can all have our opinions on what has worked well and sometimes they may be contradictory, or sometimes different things may work well in different zones. And then secondly it would be great to have something about pests and diseases that plants are most prone to.

    Thank you both!

At the moment, the wiki is definitely an experiment so we are assuming there will be many tweaks and changes to the way things work in the coming months. It is a true wiki in the sense that is completely “unmonitored” but everyone has the tools to correct or roll back changes. We are monitoring it on a high level for now, but we’ll just have to see how it goes to see if it is the right way forward.

You are completely right that we will all have different ideas on what data is “right” and “wrong” . We would like ideally to have the plant wiki reflect the general “expert” opinion for the plant – the sort of info you would read on the back of a seed packet. All of your experiences with the plant (i.e. growing out of zone, different light etc) will eventually be another layer upon this data (it’s hard to explain the whole big picture on this yet, but we’ll try explain more as we go along)

Documenting Pests and Diseases is a great idea – we’ll add that one to the list :)

How about adding a place to put when flowers are in bloom? Early spring, late spring, summer, winter?

Also harvest times (although those would need to be adjusted for which hemisphere one lives in).

When you fill out Care Instructions for a plant, is it for the general plant type or is it for the particular cultivar or variety? The reason I ask is that blooming and harvest times are different for different cultivars. Water and soil needs may be different, too.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! We’ll be doing another release for the plant wiki quite soon that will add more fields and refine the ones we have now. We’ll also add in the Imperial conversions for all you non-metric types as well ;)

@spidra – The care instructions should be the general / average data for the plant – for example, the “days to maturity” for a plant should be a rough average of how long it takes to grow across all varieties. It can then be used as a general guideline for growing that plant (as we get more data in for varieties, we’ll eventually start trying to derive the precise range from the variety data, but we’ll use the plant average as the fallback if we don’t yet have enough data)

One of our tasks for this week is the variety / cultivar wiki, so you should be able to start adding that level of detail quite soon….
