Help us organise the 2009 Folia Village Faire!
-
We thought it was high time that we organised something that celebrated and recognised all the amazing things that happen on folia – so we’re officially going to have the inaugural Folia Village Faire in November, and we need your help to start organising it!
What we’re thinking is just like a village faire, we have a competition with categories that everyone can enter. Think categories like “biggest pumpkin”, “Weirdest shaped vegetable”, “Most perfect tomato”, “Most beautiful bloom”, “Most creative growing container”…you get the idea :) Quirky is great, but more serious categories are welcome too.
Categories can be suggested by everyone over the next couple of weeks, and we’ll then shortlist the ones we like the best.
We’ll then call for entries for each category, and everyone can cast their vote during a set period in November. We’ll do a big announcement and a newsletter to let everyone know when to vote – entries will be need to be anything grown / done within the last 12 months: meaning October 08 – November 09. This should hopefully cover everyone in both hemispheres equally.
After the voting period, the results will be tallied and we’ll declare the winners who will all get some marvelous badges to show off on their profiles / websites / blogs, and we’ll also giveaway some free memberships, stickers, badges and whatever else we can find for certain categories.
We’ll also be contacting some companies to see if they’d like to offer any fabulous prizes – if you know of a company that might be interested in getting involved (in exchange for advertising perhaps?) we’d love you to let us know about it!
So, we’ve got the best part of the month to start getting this happening – as with everything around here, if you have any suggestions on how we can organise this or if you’d like to volunteer as a faire helper let us know!
I’ll create a group for the Faire in the next couple of days so we have a place to start organising…watch this space!
Edit: The Folia Faire group is now open for business – please come along and join!

Well, you had to expect that i would suggest a canning one, such as most canned, or something like that. I know that there are others that have canned this year besides just me. Also, what about something for worst disaster? Om might qualify for that one. :( She can’t show too many pics because her garden was destroyed fairly early on, so maybe this would be something that you could consider? What about something for the smallest pumpkin? :D
This sounds very interesting. Prizes sounds cool too. What about something like some free seed packets? Or even a free plant up to a certain price? Or it could be a subscription to a favorite magazine… just some thoughts. :)

It does sound like fun. Not something I can participate in (my garden has only just been started), but fun to watch at least :)

I always like the “vegetable that most resembles the gardener”
Seriously, how about “bluest flower”, “tallest sunflower”, or “best themed garden”?
Plus, for jasonga…best new or newbie garden.

Gotta have a category for best kid helper too (and a subcategory for best not-the-kid’s-real-name, too)

Cool! What a great idea! I’m voting to make sure the ornamentals get as much coverage as the edibles, and maybe the medicinal/herbals too. Oh, and some kind of category for winter sowing. My brain is whirling, whirling, whirling…

This sounds like great fun! I will volunteer some prizes from my herb business :). I love all the neat categories. Oh, weirdest bugs, or something with bugs. :) I love the harvest fairs and the spirit of the state fairs we have here.

how about most obscene vegetable/fruit (could overlap with janietta’s idea)?
on a related note, I have previously curated the Fall City Farms Museum of Anthropomorphic Vegetable Horrors, but I don’t know if it will happen this year.

I like the best kid helper one nax. That’s really cool, and the newbie garden idea, as well as the best themed garden. I remember seeing a couple that I really liked in that category. I just can’t remember who it was. Hmmm.

Awesome guys! I’m really excited about organising this, so it’s fantastic you all are too. Will create a proper group for this and we can get this going!
@SneIrish – yep. we definitely want to make sure we aren’t too veggie-centric, so suggestions on ornamental categories are very much welcome :)
@Om – Thanks for the offer of some herbs for prizes :)

Just looking outside my window now and thinking best fall foliage colour would be very un veggie centric and appropriate for 1/2 the group at least right now.

On a serious note — best record keeping? best organic practices? most sustainable? Perhaps people who wanted to enter a garden for these categories could write a journal entry summarizing their garden and what they have done in the past year to qualify.

Entering a contest is always fun, but I think it would be great if we could just pick people to nominate, and then vote? I think that it might be more fun that way, but that could just be me. :)

Most journal entries in a given month? Best [wildflower, ornamental, flower, foliage, veggie, etc.] photo?

Something for the plant wiki contributors. Most consistent updater, most edits…? That information would probably have to come direct from the sites logs (if there is enough current info) and would also be factual, thus no voting required. The absence of voting may take some of the fun out of it but the frontend wouldn’t be the same without the backend.

@Om / @graibeard : A couple of awards we can calculate from the data would be great to add to the mix, great idea!
I’ve just created the official 2009 Folia Faire group, so please join if you’d like to suggest categories / volunteer to help organise :)
