Soil Mates: Book Giveaway!
-
Hey there Folias! :-)
My name’s Eric Smith. I’m the social media marketing guy at Quirk Books, a… well, quirky publisher in Philadelphia. We publish an array of titles, from mashup fiction to cookbooks to gardening books! :-)
Our recent gardening book, Soil Mates, hits stores soon. I recently stumbled upon Folia while trying to learn about kitchen gardening, and just fell in love. What a great community to learn from! While I’m busy learning about how to grow herbs and maintain my new flowerbed in front of my rowhouse, I’d love to find out what your community thinks about our book.
So! I’m dishing out ten free copies to the first ten people to comment in this thread. Don’t feel bad if you missed out, I’m planning to dish out more as the group grows, swap seeds from plants mentioned in the book, and hopefully, introduce your community to our other gardening titles.
Just leave a comment, and I’ll send you a message. Easy as that.
Psyched to be a part of the community. Talk soon!
Eric

Welcome to Folia! It is absolutely the best by far place to meet friendly gardeners who will help however they can. I have learned so much here, and have made many gardening friends. I’d love to have a copy of the book. Looks quite interesting and informative. Companion planting is an area I really need to learn more about, since I have a small, squish in as much as you can veggie garden.

I too am very interested in companion planting as I have a intensively planted vegetable garden and would love to have a copy of the book if still available.
Welcome to Folia! I do agree with you, this site rocks!

Nice to meet all of you! :D Honestly, before Quirk book said something, I didn’t even know places like Folia existed! This is a great little website. I now have something to track my deck garden and how my plants are fairing during the winter months. So far, at least locally, I’ve been getting some strange weather. It’s a mix of snow, rain and frozen rain. I’m very surprised my Rosemary plants (and four other plants including two cacti) actually survived that. I think I know where I’ll be shopping of herbs next year. :D

Welcome Eric!
I really love being part of Folia. I am learning lots from other gardeners and I really enjoy being part of a community of people that enjoy gardening as much as I do.I love gardening with herbs as well and I always try to add a new herb to the garden every year.
What a generous offer your book giveaway is! If I make the cut, reading Soil Mates will give me something to do during the long, cold winter!

I’m always looking for new ideas. A companion tome would be more easily managed than the text list I’ve been piecing together on the computer. :-)

Planting garlic with roses is supposed to keep the bugs away!

Aww, heck. Want to send one to Oz? Or can’t I count?
(edit) Ah yes, agreed Kabanning. There are nine going by a slow recount and also checking the Topic Watchers column to the right.

I counted nine different people excluding Eric. It seems to be anyone new after this post would count as the tenth person. So I think it’s okay? It’s Eric’s call.

Yup, we’re up to nine. Next person to join gets the last freebie… well, last one for now. ;-)

It’s yours, Pink Lady!
Turns out I have two more sitting here in the HQ (some of our lovely participants are international, and we have separate distro for that). So, the next two people who post will get a copy. :-)

International in what way, Eric? Does this mean people outside of the US can’t participate? D:
-

-
Nooo. Folks outside the US can totally participate. :-)
It’s just I only have ten copies in my office in the States, so only 10 people in the USA can partake in my free copies. International folks are getting books via our offices in Canada, the UK, etc.
Don’t worry. You’re still getting one. :-)

If you’re not over the limit for the U.S., I’ll take a copy.

Yours, double dug! I’ll send you a message shortly.
Looks like that’s it for books in the US. International folks, I’ve still got a few left, so feel free to keep posting!

Do you have any books left for people in Canada? We can’t really do much for gardening here, due to the snow, so some reading would be good!
Also, welcome to Folia! I’ve found it super handy for all kinds of gardening things.

I don’t know if you still have more international books to give away. But if no one else shows up, would you mind if I request one extra on the behalf of a close friend? I’m in the middle of teaching her computer basics right now (she doesn’t know how to use the internet yet) and she’s big in to gardening. It would be a shame if she missed out on this.

The website looks great and i like the “Irreference” title…looks like there’s some good gift ideas for my wife. I like the cover of the Soil Mates book, and i do like to play around with companion planting, so if you’ve got any left that you could send down here, i’d love to get my hands on one?

Dangit! Looks like I’m a bit late. I bet you wouldn’t be able to send to Belgium anyway, huh? I could have used that title to help plan my garden beds for this spring. Let us know when it’s available online please!
Wait a tic…I just reread the convo…are there any more? Can I have one? Pretty please?

My grandmother taught me gardening and I while she was “instructing” during our gardening work she taught me about companion planting and I still practice it to this day! It works, and it works well. I look forward to getting my hands on a copy of the book when it’s released!

I was reading an article yesterday which said that basil and toms grow well together – they go well on the plate so should go well in the garden was their logic – worth a try. I have planted my veggies in with my other flowers – especially the marigolds – I’ll let you know if they survive any better than they did last year. Will check out your book, its sounds interesting – anything that makes my garden more productive is good :o)

What a marvellous way to get reviews from the intended market.
Soil is the key to healthy plants and companion planting just makes plain good sense.
I am too late and maybe too faraway (Oz) but thank you for this wonderful way of sharing :-)

Hi there! You're reading a conversation in the Soil Mates: Book Giveaway & Discussion! group on Folia.
Quirk Books recently released Soil Mates, a charming guide to companion planting in vegetable gardens. Why does broccoli love rosemary? Why doesn’t celery get along with other veggies? With recipes, pairings, and more, it’s a fun gardening book.
And well… I want to know what you think! I’ll be giving away copies of the book, sending out seeds for swaps, etc! Come join the discussion!
