New Things Have Been Added To White Harvest Seed Website
-
Howdy Friends,
First off I want to say thanks for all the joining ups, posts and comments we have received so far. I have truly enjoyed chatting with you all and reading your comments and suggestions. I look forward to each day to see if there are new things posted. We have added some of your suggestions to our website just recently. Finding your growing zone and frost dates are now on our website under the Resource tab. I know that isn’t new info that is needed by most of our Folia friends here, but it will help non Folia members who stumble across us while web surfing.
We also added more detailed planting guides, per request, for every vegetable category that we sell. It also is under the Resource tab. Again Folia members have most of that info here at their fingertips, but this will for sure help beginners that hit our site.
We have added some links of friend’s businesses and companies that we would recommend for you to check out. They all share some passions with us in what they have to offer thru their businesses. Again under Resources.
Since we first opened in October 2010, we have added numerous varieties. Over 100 kinds for sale to date. In 2011, we hope to add even more to our inventory. Our gardens will be full here of grow-outs. Our biggest concern is manpower and time, but that’s normal for everyone!
We also are working with Folia’s nic & nate currently, to develop a mutual benefiting program to promote their Folia website to our non folia friends/customers as well as creating traffic to our website.
If this is the first post you’ve read of ours, be sure to read our Introduction post and Looking for New Members post. They have alot of our business practices, philosophies, of who we are, and our dreams for the future written there. We will do all we can to be your favorite seed company in the future!Hope to see and chat with ya soon,

I like the idea of you pointing your customers here and visa versa. Great idea! I will have to check out your improvements! But not tonight, I doubt, as we will likely go to bed early after last nights fiasco. :)

Thanks TR! My garden probably won’t make Better Homes & Gardens magazine but it does the job it’s meant for. How’s your veggies doing?

Doing good, I think I will have to water though. The proposed rain has not come. I have peppers, tomatoes, and some herbs sprouted as well as aloe and coleus. Looking to get the rest of the pre frost stuff in within the next week. Farmers are planting corn here now, so that is a good sign to me that it is time. Good Friday is potato planting time again. I have yet to have a crop of them, they always rot no matter what I do, but as I often say, “I shall endeavor to persevere!” :) I told hubby I must have at least one successful crop of them before I give up because I like potatoes so much, and I will not allow them to get the better of me. And once I have a successful batch, hopefully, I will remember how I got them in order to do it again the following year. :D In other words, there will be a try for potatoes every year for forever. Say, you wouldn’t know if sweet potatoes are supposed to go in at the same time as regular ones would you?

I haven’t planted sweet potatoes before. All I know is they are a totally different veggie to tackle. They take some prep work to get them to the transplant stage. I need to do some research to get better informed.
On the potato subject, do you plant on top of the ground or in the dirt and mound up? What kind of potato is it? What is your soil like? We plant ours here on top and then cover with straw. They might be slightly smaller this way but we have had good results so far. For sure’ Don’t give up! New & fresh garden ’taters are the best!
I think we are going to try some corn and beans here this weekend. We’re getting antsy!

@ T.R.
I grew sweet potatoes last year. I had them out as soon as the last frost date was over. For me that was end of May and I was digging them up clean into mid October. It is very wise to mound up your soil before planting them. Easier to harvest and plus the tubers get bigger. To get them to transplant stage is not so hard as one might think. Get a sweet potato that is sending out shoots. Nip off those shoots ‘slips’ and then put them in a cup or jar of water for about a week.
Best thing to do is put them in a sunny window or put them outside during the day and bring them in at night (This helps the hardening off process) if you still got frost advisories. When they show roots and your frost is over poke a hole in the mounded dirt with your finger. Put the ‘slips’ in the hole, water, and then push a little dirt up around them. Viola! You planted sweet potatoes!

@tlfickle Thanks for the info! That doesn’t sound too hard. Where do you get your starter potatoes from? Grocery store?

LOL @ Grocery Store! =:-D
The type I grow is a family heirloom, got them from a great aunt and uncle of mine whom got them from a cousin of theirs around Beckley W.Va.I received two plastic coffee cans full of starters in water, sprouting up and rooting out. Just pulled the sprouts off and planted them. I grew them last year and didn’t get them logged onto folia.
They are not hard to grow at all plus the fact they vine out like crazy helps suppress the weeds! I trim the vines back to the main stem come fall and put a mound of dirt over top and store them all winter in the ground. Only had one or two that rotted over winter. Had sweet potato pie last week =;-)
Edited to add :
I had 5 rows with 10 plants per row. Each plant set on 5-6 tubers each. Figure how many wheel barrow loads I had to cart up a hill! =:-0 -
