baby asparagus

  • HollyBee 355 plants Canada5b

A number of baby asparagus have popped up in and around my asparagus bed. As is usual with plant-scattered seeds, they are not necessarily where they should be. When is it a good time to move them? There is also one mature plant I need to move so that I can build an edge around the bed.

  • The tip I have heard is to place a golf tee near the sprout now. Then in the winter when they plants are dormant then you can locate the tee, then dig up and replant dormant crown. Best of Luck…

P.S. If they are not in the way, I think letting them grow one more year will make them easier to move and will transplant with less trouble.

Thanks Cherokee Motley. I will put some sort of marker (don’t have golf tees) near each of the babies. I can’t move them in the winter as the ground will be frozen, though. Perhaps I could move them really late in the fall, this year or next.

  • I think moving really late in the fall would be best, once the foliage on your current asparagus dies back, I am sure it will be fine for these babies. You want them to be in their new home when they start growing in the spring.

When I started my asparagus from seed I overwintered it in a nursery bed and then transplanted in late May (I would have moved them earlier but I was waiting for the farmer to turn the soil with the tractor and it was super wet last spring). They are now doing pretty well and didn’t seem to be too bothered by being moved while actively growing.

If you do move them in the fall, I think you might want to mulch heavily and water them in well. The past two winters my fall planted/moved shrubs and perennials have heaved over the winter (presumably due to lack of consistent snow cover & more freeze/thaw than usual).
