Male or female?

I’m on year 3 of my asparagus, so this is my first harvest year. I have lots of spears, but they are very very skinny—thinner than a pencil—and start to branch or at least to open up by the time they are more than 8" tall (and they ALL seem to be getting that tall, practically overnight). I’ve cut and tasted some—they taste like asparagus—but I’m wondering if I somehow have only female crowns.

    Some salient info:

    • Planted from Mary Washington crowns, purchased at a Big Box
    • Ferned out last two falls, but do not recall seeing seed heads, plus I don’t seem to have any “volunteers”
    • 4 to 5 hours of sun, cool soil, where they are planted.

    Comments? Advice?

Ever seen any red berries? That seems to be the dead give-away for female asparagus plants, at least from what I’ve read. I’m brand new at raising Asparagus.

  • No sure about male or female, but in the past the size of my asparagus has more to do with the quality of the soil then the time in the ground. In great soil I get thick spears year 2 easily, in poor soil they are still thin in year three. My suggestion, try to continue to improve the soil for the best long term bed. Also, buy an organic asp. fertilizer if you can.

    Best of Luck…
