Thinking of planting some Cucumbers indoors mid-July for this fall's harvest

Logically it seems that a person would simply plant Cucumbers outside directly in the ground this time of year.

But for several reasons, I’m thinking of planting mine indoors and later transplanting them outside into an area that I’ve not yet prepared for planting.

    1) The Rabbits seem to eat anything that they like just as soon as it sprouts. Do they like Cucumbers? I’d really hate to belatedly learn that yes they do!

    2) It’s so hot and dry that it seems much easier to water and to tend to Cucumber plants indoors in my existing seed-starting area with shop lights.

    3) Hopefully between the time I plant the seeds and the time they are ready to transplant, we’ll have some cooler or at least overcast weather that will be conducive to my getting out and digging up and adding compost to where I want the Cucumbers to grow.

Then again, perhaps Cucumbers grow so fast either place that growing them inside might not offer any real advantage other than protection from the rabbits.

Do you plant lots of seeds indoors this time of year, or just buy plants, or plant the seeds outside and let them take their chances with the rabbits?

  • With your situation, I would start them inside too. Plus, I found I just worry less about seeds I have germinating inside.

Cucumber roots grow fast. I would use tall pots, 4 or 5 inches, maybe made from toilet paper rolls, so as not to stunt them.

Makes sense to me. I start seeds in the spring inside when the conditions are too rough to do it outside. Logically, this wouldn’t be too different.

Two of the 4 Cucumber seeds I planted sprouted. One has grown nicely, the other is still rather small. But one Cucumber plant is probably all that I really need based on the great results I got earlier this year with thinned Cucumber plants from my gardener friend Bob. I realized later that when he thins, he just pulls plants out of the ground. Then sticks them in a plastic pot and fills it with potting soil. With that rough root-ripping out treatment, I’m amazed that the 3 thinnings he gave me survived at all, much less thrived!
