Why are there two different ways to input photos here?
-
Some places in Folia you can directly upload photos from your computer. Other places you must first upload you photos someplace else like Flickr, and then link to them.
I can understand the need to minimize storage space and bandwidth. So why not do all photos one way or the other? Is this something that is being changed over time? Or is it something that now simply cannot be changed?

I wondered that myself!

I would also prefer the option to upload ‘comment’ photos using the same interface as ‘journal’ photos. It just makes it easier to keep all photos in one location.
Thanks in Advance….

We originally allowed for direct uploading on group posts as a test to see if we could afford the added costs of photo hosting on the site – since then it has been difficult to find the time to evolve this forward, so it is currently unfortunately stuck as an ongoing beta test. It’s still on my todo list, hopefully I will get to improving this in the near future, thanks for your patience :)

Nic —
Continue to love the site, new season so I am just now getting back into the swing of things and checking out old messages. Any progress on the above issue, do you think we will be able to upload directly from our computers this year. Posting online first is not the end of the world, but it is much easier to upload directly. Thanks for all you do to keep the site running!!! — John

To be honest, I think the case for direct uploads is much less clearer than it was a few years ago. When I first joined Folia, I was not a Flickr user and would quite have liked the functionality built in.
Since three or four years ago, most mobile phones include not only a respectable camera, but also WiFi connectivity and support for third-party sharing services such as Flickr. I believe some recent digital cameras offer the same, though I’ve never used a dedicated one that does so.
Therefore, it’s pretty simple to share photos to Flickr as I take them, and so I tend to upload the photos straight from my phone, then later write a journal from the computer. I can see that it might be useful to add a locally-sourced photo in some situations, but with the wide uptake of smartphones and the extensive availability of third-party sharing, I can’t see as much of a use case for local photo uploads as there used to be.

Magick777—
Your points are all very well stated and true for the younger generation. As a fifty year old, I use the simplest of phones, not a smart phone. For taking garden images, I use a somewhat nice camera to take my shots and then use Picasso to improve each shot before uploading.
If I ever decide to upgrade my phone, maybe I will start sending a few shots directly but I really like to edit my photos before uploading. To me, I want each picture to really pop if I upload it. (I am not successfully at always getting the pop, but I do try.)
- Side note, I see I can browse directly for an image from this interface.

I would like to be able to use my photobucket pictures in these forum posts, But IMO thier are much more pressing items needing to be fixed before adding features. Like Supporters being punished when viewing a non-supporters list & being treated like a non-supporter. There again there are many bugs that need to be addressed.
[Lets see if my post gets edited like others have been]

While I can see what Cherokee is saying, I’m more inclined to agree with Magick. I’d almost rather see expanded options for 3rd party site support (Picasa web albums, SkyDrive would be awesome) than photos hosted on Folia.

Hi ErikInTheBakery – will check out if we can do anything with SkyDrive (if they have an API then it’s definitely possible)
We have supported Picasa Web for quite a few years now – I’ve recently fixed some issues with our linking process as Picasa made some updates which broke our integration for a while. I’ve updated the help article to explain what details you now need to enter in order to make this work here:
How do I find my Picasa username?
Give me a shout if you have any issues getting your account linked :)

I’m mainly interested in the SkyDrive part as I take most of my garden pictures with a Windows phone which can upload them automatically. We filled up our Picasa Web albums with baby pictures ;-)
